How to clean mucky eyes

Most mucky eyes are caused by conjunctivitis. This is often called red eye and it is a common eye condition. Normally this will get better on its own without treatment, but you may find that your client’s eyes seem mucky and sticky in the mornings.

What causes conjunctivitis?

This takes place when the thin layer of cells which cover the front of the eyes become inflamed. This layer is called the conjunctiva, and you will see some or all the following signs:

  • Inflammation
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Watering eyes
  • Pus sticking the lashes together
  • A gritty or burning feeling

What causes this?

  • Infection
  • An allergic reaction
  • An irritant to the conjunctiva, like an eyelash

How do we treat this?

Do

  • Wipe down the eye with previously boiled and cooled water, using a different cotton pad for each eye
  • Place a cold towel over the eyes for a few minutes
  • Use lubricant drops which you can buy from the chemist
  • Wash hands frequently, particularly after touching the eyes

Don’t

  • Rub the eyes
  • Share pillows and towels
  • Wear contact lenses until this is completely cleared up
  • Use the same lenses after the infection has cleared

Final thoughts

If you are in any doubt about whether you or your client have conjunctivitis or not, it is best to see the doctor and let them prescribe an alternative treatment.

If the condition has not cleared up after ten days, then you should also see the doctor.
