Accidents happen in every kitchen, and having grubby cabinets when you are with a client is not unusual. Fingerprints seem to appear, even when we have clean hands, and if they are not cleaned often, kitchen cabinets can soon start to look dirty and grimy.
As live-in carers we may go to a placement where the cabinets are old and have built up grime on them.
No matter what the surface of the cabinet, whether it is glass, laminate, paint, or wood, they will soon start to look dirty if they are stained. While the kitchen will look less visually appealing, the grime can also harbour bacteria which can affect health.
Use a clean cloth and apply a grease cutting all purpose cleaner. You can also use a mix of dish soap and water. Make sure that the cloth is only damp, not dripping with water.
Wipe on both sides of the cabinet door and pay attention to areas around the handles as this is where the most grease will accumulate.
The area right above the cooker is where you may find the most grime. For this you may want to use a scrub pad and gently rub over the grime.
Once you have removed the grime, use a damp cloth to remove any soap or cleanser residue.
Using a microfiber cloth, you can now wipe down the cabinets and buff up lightly.
For wooden cabinets you can buy special creams which do not damage the wood. Follow the instructions and buff up gently so you do not scratch the wood.
If you make a habit of giving the cabinets a wipe down after each meal, they will stay in good condition and look attractive, even though they may be old.
