Just because our client has dentures, it does not mean that they don’t need to be taken care of. Often, we may find that a client believes that simply soaking the dentures in a solution from the supermarket is enough to keep them clean.
For dentures to continue to look good, they need to be cleaned.
A point to note here is that the gums should also be kept clean. Gently massage the gums with a soft bristle toothbrush to remove any food particles. Rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash.
How to care for dentures
While they are made of robust material, dentures are by no means indestructible. If they are left in hot water, they may warp and will no longer fit.
Remove after eating
Use running water over the dentures to remove any food particles. Take care not to drop as they can break if dropped on a hard surface.
Clean the dentures
Gently brush the dentures with a soft bristle toothbrush. You should do this at least every day.
Soak overnight
Most dentures need to be fully immersed in liquid to prevent them drying out. Unless the dentist has said so, you should never leave dentures out of liquid overnight. The dentist will also recommend a suitable solution to place them in.
Rinse and use
You need to rinse thoroughly before placing back into the mouth so that all soaking liquid is removed. Sometimes solutions can contain chemicals which can be harmful if swallowed.
What to avoid
Abrasive cleaners such as stiff bristle brushes and harsh toothpaste
Whitening toothpaste as this often contains peroxide
Bleach products as these can weaken the dentures and change the colour.
Hot water as this can warp the dentures
Final thoughts
If your client has dentures, then it is a good idea to make an appointment for a dental checkup at least every six months. This will make sure that the dentures stay firmly in place and fit well as gums can change shape, causing dentures to become uncomfortable over time.
