How to clean dentures

It is very likely that as a live-in carer you will at some point need to take care of your client’s dentures. Both partial and full sets of dentures need correct care to keep them clean and stain-free.

Here’s how to do this:

  • Remove and rinse after eating. Just running them under the tap will remove any loose particles of food.
  • Handle them with care. They can break if dropped and can also bend easily, particularly at the clasps.
  • Have your client clean their mouth as well as this will remove food and any adhesive from the gums.
  • Brush dentures gently. Do this at least once a day. Use a soft toothbrush and make sure to brush into any grooves to remove debris.
  • Soak them overnight. To keep their shape, most dentures need to be kept moist. There are many solutions available which should be added to water to soak the dentures in. You can ask the chemist which one is best.
  • Rinse before using. Do not let your client use the soaking solution to clean their mouth as often this contains harmful chemicals. This is why it is important to rinse thoroughly before using.

Avoid:

  • Abrasive cleaning materials
  • Stiff bristle brushes
  • Whitening toothpastes
  • Any products containing bleach
  • Hot water as this can warp dentures
