How to clean cast iron pots and pans

There are two recognised ways to wash cast iron cookware.

Without salt

  • When cool enough to handle, add some mild dish soap and with a still bristle brush, using gentle movements scrub until the pot is clean. Rinse with clean water.
  • Now reheat the pot for 30 seconds or until any remaining water drops start to evaporate. Once dry, remove from the heat.
  • Preseason by coating the interior and exterior with drops of vegetable oil. You should spread this using a paper towel.
  • Once cool enough to handle, place a paper towel on the interior surface to absorb moisture and pack it away.

With salt

  • Instead of dish soap you can use coarse salt
  • Empty the pot or pan of any food debris
  • Pour a thin layer of salt on the interior surface and make sure it is completely coated
  • Using a wooden spoon or spatula start to scrape off any stuck on food
  • Let the salt cool completely then empty it along with all the food particles into the rubbish bin
  • Wipe clean with a paper towel

Final thoughts

Never be tempted to scrub cast iron with any abrasive cloths such as steel wool or scouring pads.

Be careful when handling cast iron as it is heavy and dropping it on a glass top hob will easily crack to glass.
