How to change the washer fluid in the car

It is a good idea to have a schedule of checking the fluid in the washer bottle and ideally it should be done every two weeks. You should also increase this to a weekly check in the winter months when you use more fluid.

It is important that in the winter months you use a product which is designed for winter weather because it can help to prevent the tank from freezing up.

How do we top up the washer bottle?

Open the bonnet and locate the washer bottle

If you are unsure where it is located then check the vehicle handbook which will show you the exact position of the bottle. You will also see that the cap is marked with a picture of the windscreen being sprayed with water.

Lift the cap and fill

Generally the cap does not screw off but just lifts off. Pour in enough fluid to reach the maximum mark. There will be a line to indicate this. If you are uncomfortable pouring in then you may want to use a funnel so you do not spill any liquid.

Close the cap

You should replace the cap in the same way by pushing it onto the neck.

Close the bonnet

Shut the bonnet and you are ready to drive away.

Where do we buy washer fluid?

You can buy washer fluid from any car shop and also often in large supermarkets. Be sure to check what you buy as many now come as ready to use, so you can use them straight from the bottle. There are some types that need water added to the mixture.

Final thoughts

It is not necessary to carry washer fluid in the car with you, but it is a good idea to have some at home so that you can top up every week or two. If you notice that little or no fluid is coming out when you try to spray it on, then check the nozzles on the bonnet as you may find dirt and debris has become trapped in them.
