How to change doctors

Sometimes, whether we like it or not, it may become necessary to change doctors and find a new one.

Doctors retire and new ones take their places, or you may find yourself at a different placement which makes visiting your old doctor impossible.

There are several reasons why you may want to change, not least that you simply do not get on with the present doctor and need someone who understands your ailment a little better.

A point to remember is that you do not need the consent of the old doctor to change to another one. When you have found another doctor, it is simply a matter of transferring over to them.

Here’s how to do it

If appropriate, make one last appointment

If you are relocating, try to have a last visit where you can ask about your records and medications. This will give you a chance to discuss any last-minute medication adjustments.

Choose another doctor before you leave

It is never a good idea to be without a doctor as you may need to refill a prescription or schedule a routine check which may leave you on a waiting list. Better to find a new doctor before severing ties with the previous one.

If you are leaving on good terms, you could ask for a recommendation for a new doctor, which many doctors will be happy to do.

Get your records

Either ask for paper copies or have them emailed to you. This way you can send or present them to your new doctor without waiting for them to be sent. If you are healthy, you should only need to ask for the last three years, although if you have medical issues then you may want to have your records from before that.

Visit your new doctor

Always a good idea to introduce yourself, update your prescription if needed and discuss your medical history and your current medication. Your new doctor may ask you why you are transferring, and you should be honest about your reason.

Final thoughts

Just like when we meet strangers, we may not get on with everyone all the time, you may feel you need to see more than one doctor before transferring. Make sure that the new doctor understands your individual medical condition and is prepared to work with you on any issues you have.
