How to buy a car in the UK

While there is an excellent public transport service in the UK, you may prefer to have your own car when traveling to your placement.

Buying a car in the UK is not a difficult thing, in fact is it quite easy.

Here’s a ‘Quick start’ guide which should make things easier.

·       First, find a vehicle

·       Have a MOT test if necessary

·       Search for and purchase car insurance

·       Pay for vehicle, receive V5C/2 from owner

·       Go online and pay for vehicle tax

·       Drive vehicle away and wait a couple of weeks for full V5C to arrive

You should ask someone who knows more about cars that you do if you are not comfortable doing this yourself. You may find that your client has a son who is happy to do this for you. It is always worth asking.

Check the MOT dates. Once the car is over three years it must have an MOT every year. You can sign up online to receive emails reminding you that the MOT is due. This is a great idea as it is not something you want to forget about and find that you cannot drive your car.

Insure the vehicle. Before your new car can legally be driven you need to buy some insurance. Again, speak to other people about their recommendations. Neighbours who have cars may tell you the best places to get this. Most of the time, though, you can compare insurance policies online and find the one that suits you best.

Tax the vehicle. Again, before you can legally drive the car you need to tax it. You can do this online.
