No one enjoys preparing food in poor light and you should not feel that you are squinting when you prepare the vegetables or do the dishes. A dark kitchen is more than an inconvenience, it can also be dangerous when using sharp knives.
What to do?
Swap the light bulbs. You will most likely find that your client’s kitchen has light bulbs which are simply too weak to be effective. These are probably 60 watts or less and they are inadequate for working there.
If you increase the wattage to between 80-100 you will notice a marked difference in brightness.
Another way to brighten a dull kitchen is to swap traditional bulbs for LED ones. These are far brighter than the old-fashioned bulbs.
Add under-cabinet lights. Again, this does not need to be expensive. There are plenty of stick-on LED strips which you can find at any DIY store. Stick on LED lights will illuminate the countertops while you work.
If your client’s house has a dull kitchen, please do yourself a huge favour by changing it. Discuss with the family and they should agree that it can be a hazard which is easily rectified at not a great cost.
