How to bake the best potatoes

Very little beats the smell of a baked potato, and many people will agree that the best way to make a baked potato is in the oven.

While this may be true, it is also time consuming which may be the reason for them not being as popular as they could be.

Let’s look at both ways to bake the best potatoes

In the oven

  • 3 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 8 large baking potatoes

Sour cream or any other filling you fancy

  • Heat the oven to 220C or 200C fab. This equates to gas mark 7
  • Rub a small amount of oil overreach potato.
  • Place the potatoes on the top shelf in the oven.
  • Bake for 20 mins then tun the heat down to 190C, 170C fan or gas mark 5
  • Bake for 45 minutes to an hour until the skin is crisp and the center soft.
  • Remove, cut a cross in the top and pop your filling inside.

In the microwave oven

A medium sized potato will bake in the microwave in around 7 minutes, which make it an ideal meal option when you are short on time.

  • Wash the potatoes. You may need to scrub the skin if it is dirty. Rinse and dry well.
  • Poke the potatoes all over with a fork. This helps the steam to escape and will also prevent the potato from exploding in the microwave.
  • Microwave the potatoes. Depending on the size, you should start with 3-4 minutes then turn the potatoes over and cook for a further 3 minutes.
  • Check that the potatoes are done by inserting a sharp skewer into the center. Cook for an extra minute if needed.
  • Remove, cut a cross in the top and fill with your chosen toppings.

Note: If you want the skin crispy be sure to dry it completely then rub a little oil in before you microwave it.

Toppings:

  • Sour cream
  • Cheese
  • Crispy bacon
  • Baked beans
  • Flaked tuna
